We all know the survival rate of startups. Scale-ups also face stagering statistics - most don't make it past 8 years. Those that do are often in a geographic cluster (#EuropeanScaleupMonitor & Startup Genome). Why?#Scaleups that want to #scale need to break through several barriers.1. Pioneering & surviving for growth: your first paid customer, your first employee, etc.2. Proving product-market fit to achieve some stability (beyond the early adopters).3. Optimizing, setting up the foundations for planning & measuring, and getting ready to scale. Most first-time company scalers think the next step is to "simply" scaling up what they've been doing. However, my personal experiences and research (Gallup) say scaling is more like #transforming. It requires not only different skills but also a different (mental) approach. Things like communication, responsibility, decision-making, etc move from interpersonal and relational to requiring a process-based approach (what I call a #LivingSystem)."That what got you here will not get you there." And that is often difficult to accept. The senior leadership will have to transform. #Transformation requires internal & external guidance from employees like me with the drive & experience to force processes into existence and a diverse #NonExecutiveBoard #iNEDIs your company struggling to break through barriers? Share your story in the comments, and don't forget to ask for help!

I was asked the question (offline) of what to measure (regarding #Engagement). I'm sharing my anonymized answer here.Besides progress on your BHAG (your North Star, your mission/vision/purpose) actions - IF YOU ARE SCALING - measure for one reason only (besides those required by the law): to answer an actual (meaning: formulated, written down and, ideally, delegated down) question that needs a data-driven decision.Because if you start measuring anything else, you're (nearly always) wasting time & resources. That is, until you get to the lifecycle where a department or product/market is stable, because then you need to start measuring just about everything to fine-tune your optimizations & steering (I strongly believe in serendipity while digging through data & trends to get a deep & holistic understanding for things). So, for example, if you are small (<120 people) and still transforming fast. and use tools like Flowtrace or OfficeVibe to measure engagement quantitatively; please stop and first improve the qualitative listening & up-reporting skills of managers (do more/better one-on-ones the Manager Tools way).

Bringing EnergyTech & ClimateTech to Market

Since our acquisition by Google, I've had the opportunity to speak with a number of ClimateTech startups. These are 💡 The 3 most common issues I've encountered in their narratives/pitches and ideas on how to fix them:1️⃣ Fall in love with the business problemToo often startups rush to 'show off' their product/solution. It's really important to spend as much time on defining and understanding the problem, as on demonstrating the solution.💡Advice: First describe the problem and discuss it with your audience. Are they aware of the problem? Do they experience it themselves? Help them see how you are driving the change that the market needs and that will help them (the customer) achieve their goals.2️⃣ Doing Good by Doing WellClimateTech startups place much emphasis on why their product/solution is good for the planet and not enough on why customers will be willing to pay for it.💡Advice: Focus on your customers’ business drivers for buying. Yes, your B2B customers want to help fight climate change. However, they need a solid business justification to buy. This will be either cost reduction, revenue growth or regulation compliance. Describe the challenge/opportunity from the customer’s business perspective3️⃣ What Have I Learnt That Others Don't Know?At every stage of the startup roller coaster, you are learning about the market and about your customers' needs and pains. Especially in ClimateTech, where we are all learning. Are you articulating these learnings back to the market?💡Advice: Regularly take the time to consolidate those market learnings and then share these insights back to customers and investors. These insights act as proof/validation of your value proposition and your theory of change. Such an approach demonstrates humility and positions you as a ‘learner’ to investors and as a trusted advisor to customers.💡💡Finally, consider all three as applicable to investor pitches as well customer sales.💡💡Thanks Amalia Helen for helping me consolidate these thoughts! The opinions stated here are my own, not those of my employer.#climatetech #climatechange #startups

I often get asked what it's like for #productmarketing at a late stage hyper growth company. There is one major difference vs. other stage companies:👉🏻 The speed and level of effort needed to successfully adapt. Before you disagree, hear me out.1️⃣ vs. early stage startupsSure, lots of startups, especially in the early stages require you to adapt at lightening pace...But what makes them different to late stage hyper growth is the effort it takes to adapt. At early stage companies the process of adaption is much more simple. You likely have fewer people to align with, less users to worry about, and those clients tend to be early adopters (and easier to work with). At hyper growth late stage, the company is much larger. The user base is much bigger - and so communicating to them becomes more of a challenge. The client types become more varied, and the % of early adopters in the total client list becomes less. There are many many moving parts.Adapting takes more and more internal and external alignment.2️⃣ vs. large public companiesAt large companies, you have the complexity of the size internally and externally. So every time you need to adapt, it takes enormous energy to successfully align. But at large public companies you very rarely have the pace of change.Things move much more slowly, even than at a late stage startup.--------------And yet, this is what makes hyper growth such an amazing place to be.The challenges keep coming - and you do or die.The adrenaline flows. You never get bored.

Every now and then, we hear news like this: "🗞️📰 Pristyn Care is cutting 120 jobs to try to make a profit by 2025….🗞️📰 Pristyn Care Sets Profitability Target for FY25, Unveils IPO Plans for 2027….🗞️📰 Exclusive: Pristyn Care Lays Off 120 Employees, Eyes Profitability By FY25..I'm not sure if this was the only option left for the company, if the media likes to focus on it for TRP, or if there is any other reason.I always stress this in my advice to startup founders. Startups need to stay PROFITABLE.But it's also important to treat your team members well. Sometimes, cutting jobs might seem like a good idea to quickly become profitable, but it's not always the best choice. Successful startups focus on growing steadily and coming up with new ideas. Investors want to see companies with good plans, talented teams, great work culture and the potential to succeed in the long run.Instead of eliminating jobs, startups can try other things, like making operations more efficient, finding different ways to make money, or making their product fit the market better.Let's build businesses that do well without hurting those who work for us.Is it OK to fire people to make any business profitable?#startupculture #workculturematters #foundervision

Fresh founders, if you're working on finding #product-market fit, mark your calendar to tune in for the 1-on-1 conversation between Maja Voje and our #CEO Paul on 30 Nov 2023 (Thurs) at 2:00pm to 3:00pm (Singapore time) via Zoom.Maja Voje will be sharing her #expert #knowledge about "how can battle-tested frameworks and effective go-to-market strategies help #startups achieve #productmarketfit?".It's #free to participate, so register now 👉 https://lnkd.in/gGNFXAc9View conference program 👉 https://lnkd.in/gvHtxa33See you at our #virtual #conference! 😁*Note:- Maja Voje spent 11 years working in #growth and #marketing across the spectrum of high-profile unicorns and enterprises such as Google, Rocket Internet, Bayer, and Heineken to scaleups and over 350 startups. She learned one lesson: growth advice that works great for the “big tech” does not necessarily translate into companies that are trying to find their place in the sun. So she went ahead and rewrote the #GTM marketing and growth science to embrace these nuances and find answers and progression for companies that are tackling more unknowns than knowns and need logical and firm guidance on how to make decisions with confidence to win in their GTM efforts.- roiquant meets is the name of our virtual conference, which is also the sponsors-&-partners roundtable event of our virtual startup competitions.
