We all know the survival rate of startups. Scale-ups also face stagering statistics - most don't make it past 8 years. Those that do are often in a geographic cluster (#EuropeanScaleupMonitor & Startup Genome). Why?#Scaleups that want to #scale need to break through several barriers.1. Pioneering & surviving for growth: your first paid customer, your first employee, etc.2. Proving product-market fit to achieve some stability (beyond the early adopters).3. Optimizing, setting up the foundations for planning & measuring, and getting ready to scale. Most first-time company scalers think the next step is to "simply" scaling up what they've been doing. However, my personal experiences and research (Gallup) say scaling is more like #transforming. It requires not only different skills but also a different (mental) approach. Things like communication, responsibility, decision-making, etc move from interpersonal and relational to requiring a process-based approach (what I call a #LivingSystem)."That what got you here will not get you there." And that is often difficult to accept. The senior leadership will have to transform. #Transformation requires internal & external guidance from employees like me with the drive & experience to force processes into existence and a diverse #NonExecutiveBoard #iNEDIs your company struggling to break through barriers? Share your story in the comments, and don't forget to ask for help!

My periodic state of future thinking. As structure providing institutions like the church, state, work, family and even school lose their power to direct life and society, individuals need to find their own individual purposes in life and imagine, create & direct their own story. This requires different skills! In most richer countries, material needs are commoditized. This means meaning now needs to come from their story, their purpose. Living becomes the sharing of experiences. Ownership changes. This requires us to use different rules to structure our societies and lives. Rules that facilitate sharing, review the way we look at risks and how we deal with them.Risk-thinking will move from heterogeneous groups of individuals to individualized metrics, hom*ogeneous (cross-border) groups, and the larger societal risks like global weather conditions, fair global distribution of resources like water, food, and energy. This will lead to different ways of valuing resources like time, materials, and knowledge.Moving again back from a product-driven economy via the (current) marketing-based reality creation to the networked economy where the perceived reality and relationships are key. Thus, key will become the ability to accomplish an experience for another, a group, or society - and to make the experience meaningful, positive & lasting.A key skill will be to guide the dialogue to come to a mutually beneficial experience. This means letting go of the traditional idea of a company as a supplier. Organizations become pools of processes and resources to facilitate "experience makers"; those on a mission with a vision. To co-create value for the customer (who will move from individuals to communities of interest and communities of practice).Transparency and the speed & ability to translate information in meaning and action become success criteria.Problems to overcome are nearly always because of a lack of full impact-knowledge or transparency somewhere in the chain. This requires our ability to convey that information at the point of consumption (like the hidden costs both at the beginning of a chain, like poor environmental and societal impact; and in the end, like the post-consumption long-term health & environmental damage). And this will only become a truly solved problem if we track nearly all our resources throughout the lifecycle (both: pre-creation and post-consumption). Because only then can we properly attribute and assign both the value and all the costs. To best way to deal with that transition, is to live like everything you do is judged by (y)our children's children. Do your best to do what is right with all the knowledge you now have to do right by (y)our past, present, and #future.

If you work with data, I recommend you read Piethein Strengholt's book, but this article is an excellent hands-on starting point for any scale-up (wannabe) organization. #DataManagement
